In Sports; The 21st FIFA World Cup kicks off in the Russian capital of Moscow this evening. In the opener, hosts Russia will play Saudi Arabia in Group A at 8:30 PM Indian Time. An elaborate opening ceremony will precede the match at the Luzhniki Stadium. Our correspondent has filed this report:
“This is it then. After four years of preparations, the Football World Cup is here, with 32 nations set to battle it out for the coveted 18 carat Gold trophy. Even with the absence of bigwigs like Italy, the Netherlands, Chile and the US, the event promises to be full of action and drama. Germany will be eying to retain their world champions status, with this year’s favourites Brazil, led by Neymar, eager to dethrone the ‘Die Mannschaft’ after what they did to the five-time winners four years ago. In what will probably be their last World Cup, rivals Argentine Lionel Messi and Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo will look to claim the only missing piece from their otherwise full-of-trophies cabinet. France, Spain, Belgium and England have improved a lot, and could come up with something memorable. No African nation has ever made it past the quarterfinals. Nigeria, Senegal and Mohamed Salah-led Egypt would be eager to change just that.
