"World Environment Day is a platform for encouraging awareness and propagating the need for protecting the environment. The theme for the year 2018 is “Beat Plastic Pollution”. Plastic, which is rampantly polluting our water bodies, harming marine life and posing a threat to human health, has been one of the major concerns of environmental bodies this year. Though a large part of the population depends on plastic for their daily use, nearly one-third of it is not disposed off properly and ends up clogging drains and choking the environment. This day is a call for awakening of individuals to take charge of protecting their environment and to realise the severity of plastic usage in daily life
In an exclusive interview to AIR, Environment Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan said, the industry is also acting in a responsible manner to deal with plastic waste.
प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी आज नई दिल्ली में विश्व पर्यावरण दिवस के वैश्विक आयोजन को संबोधित करेंगे। भारत इस बार 43वें विश्व पर्यावरण दिवस आयोजन की मेज़बानी कर रहा है। समारोह में पर्यावरण मंत्री, संयुक्त राष्ट्र के प्रतिनिधि और विभिन्न उद्योग समूहों के सदस्य भी शामिल होंगे। श्री मोदी इस अवसर पर राजपथ के लॉन में आयोजित प्रदर्शनी भी देखेंगे।
पर्यावरण मंत्री डॉक्टर हर्षवर्धन ने कहा कि उद्योग जगत भी प्लास्टिक के कचरे से निपटने के लिए जिम्मेदार तरीके से काम कर रहा है।

Whales dying consuming loads of plastic bags has become an increasingly common sight. But experts warn the greatest threat might be invisible. Microplastic, have been found in tap water, ground water and inside fish that millions of people eat across globe every day. About eight million tonnes of plastic waste is dumped into the world's oceans every year. Its equal to one garbage truck of plastic every minute of the day, with this rate, the total amount of plastic trash in the oceans is expected to double by 2025.
"India is committed to reducing 33 to 35 percent of emission intensity of its GDP during 2005 to 2030. We will reduce the emission intensity of India GDP by 20 to 25 percent by 2020."
Speaking on clean energy, the Prime Minister said, Government has targeted for generation of 175 Giga Watt of Solar and Wind energy by 2022.
Chief of UN Environment Programme, UNEP Eric Solheim in his address promised than UN will work with India to target 6 million farmers to turn agriculture green.
प्रधानमंत्री मोदी ने प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण के खतरे से निपटने के लिए सभी लोगों से आह्वान किया है। श्री मोदी ने लोगों से पोलीथीन और घटिया किस्म के प्लास्टिक को प्रयोग नहीं करने का संकल्प लेने को भी कहा है।

ये केवल सौंदर्यपरक मुद्दा नहीं है बल्कि प्लास्टिक से समुद्री जीव मर रहे हैं। विशेषज्ञों ने और बडे खतरों के प्रति आगाह किया है। प्लास्टिक के टुकड़े नल के पानी, जमीनी पानी और मछलियों में पाए जाते हैं, जिन्हें रोज सारी दुनिया में करोड़ों लोग खाते हैं। हर साल 80 लाख टन प्लास्टिक का कचरा समु्ंदर में फेंका जाता है। और इसके 2025 तक 25 करोड़ टन होने का अनुमान है। समाचार कक्ष से वीरेन्द्र कौशिक।
प्रधानमंत्री नरेन्द्र मोदी ने कहा है कि भारत 2030 तक उत्सर्जन में अपने सकल घरेलू उत्पाद-जी डी पी की 33 से 35 प्रतिशत कमी करने के लिए वचनबद्ध है।
स्वच्छ ऊर्जा के बारे में प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा कि सरकार ने 2022 तक सौर और पवन ऊर्जा से 175 गीगावाट बिजली के उत्पादन का लक्ष्य रखा है।
संयुक्त राष्ट्र पर्यावरण कार्यक्रम के प्रमुख ऐरिक सोलहिम ने वचन दिया कि संयुक्त राष्ट्र 60 लाख किसानों को हरित खेती अपनाने के लिए भारत के साथ मिलकर काम करेगा। इस वर्ष भारत 47 वें विश्व पर्यावरण दिवस का वैश्विक मेजबान देश है।

Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers Ananth Kumar launched India's first oxo-biodegradable sanitary napkin in Bengaluru today on World Environment Day. Priced at just 10 rupees for a pack of four sanitary pads, these will be available in all the 3,600 Jan Aushadhi kendras across the country by the 10th of next month.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Kumar said, sanitary napkins launched under Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana will decompose within three to six months unlike other sanitary pads that take over 500 years.

Mr Razzaz served as education minister in the outgoing Mulki government.
